Stifle

The large joint high on the hind leg, near the flank; it matches our knee.

What is it?

The stifle has a locking mechanism that, with the stay apparatus, lets the horse sleep standing without using muscles. Sometimes this lock catches briefly, so the leg seems to jam for a moment.
