A narrow white band starting at the hoof and reaching up less than an inch, or less than halfway up the pastern. The skin beneath is pink.

What is it often confused with?

• Pastern

  A pastern marking is white reaching to the top of the pastern, below the fetlock.

• Sock

  A sock is white reaching from the hoof to about halfway up the cannon.
